Vinnie Cook | Week 1 | Mixtape
I actually found it hard to pin-point songs that mean something in my life because there are so many - the power of music. The following top 10 are of "this moment" in my life. Honourable mentions not in this list include Jessie J (any song, her voice can quite literally turn my frown upside down, without fail), Sam Cooke - A Change Gonna Come (makes me reflect on my background), Randy Crawford - You Might Need Somebody & Streetlights (music memories with my mum), La Roux - In for the Kill (A song that influenced my style for a period and sent me back to the 80's), Culture Club, and Elvis Presley (memories that continue with my nan who still swears by 'The King').
Now,
1. Prince - Purple Rain.
To me this song is all about our own interpretations. I really feel that it lyrically applies to me and "purple rain" just makes sense in my own way. It's power, it's a classic, and it's instrumental is beautiful.
2. Rihanna ft. Clavin Harris - We Found love.
For me this song represents and reminds me of my turbulent past years; the ups, the downs, my feelings, emotions, and everything that came with it. I've listened to this song everyday since its realise, and it will always hold a high place in my books as I see it as the main song that was there when I turned 21, leaving a turbulent chapter behind. Not to mention the lovely vocals and wonderful dance instrumental. Yes the lyrics are short... short and sweet!
3. Amy Winehouse - Stronger Than Me.
This song (artist) is significant in my life because this is the person that musically matured me and gave me musical taste and a mind of my own. Amy Winehouse was the first artist to truly make me appreciate music.
4. Glee featuring Gwyneth Paltrow - Landside (originally by Fleetwood Mac).
This song is significant to me because it sums up the breaking point in a long term relationship of mine. The lyrics really hit me like a bullet;
"Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes bolder, children get older
I'm getting older too, well, I'm getting older too"
And no, I am not ashamed to say it - I prefer the Glee version.
5. This Mortal Coil (Cocteau Twins) - Song of the Siren.
This song may be haunting and beautiful, but for me it holds very eery memories, things concerning mental health problems. Recommendation: do not let people with Bi-polar listen to this song :)
6. Beyonce - 1 + 1.
I am not exactly a Beyonce fan, but I think this song is a really beautiful piece. It is significant to me in regards to a relationship. Credit to 'B' for wonderful vocals and the beautiful guitar riff at the end.
7. Chris Issak - Wicked Game.
For me this is how I've lyrically felt at times, a relationship can just turn into a wicked game. This is one I get carried away with, imaging myself in a black and white Tarantino-esque scene, cigarette in mouth (don't smoke), a bottle of jack (hate Jack Daniels), and in a trashed room (hate mess - OCD)....
8. Paramore - Misguided Ghosts.
This song has impact on me because I share it with someone special, we appreciate it at the same level and share the connection.
9. The Lion King - Circle of Life.
This was for the "lol", but yes it will be a significant song in my life and a lovely memory. I went to see The Lion King at the theatre in London for my 21st.
10. Siobhan Donaghy - Medevac.
This last one is more of a music-only memory. I had stumbled across this wonderful artists' album 'Ghosts' by chance. This song is on of my favourites from the album, and to me I will always have this artist in mind because she criminally fell through the public eye despite critical acclaim. If anyone reading this gets the opportunity than by all means Wikipedia the album tracklisting and go through it on Youtube, she deserves recognition.
