XFM

I spent more than the allocated time listening to commercial London based indie station XFM. Although I spent time focusing on the station and making notes, I appreciated the music and have listened to it everyday this week for pleasure. I chose this station because I have not yet spend dedicated time listening to it for academic purposes and I found it interesting that a station of that size and specialism was still a commercial station.

I found that the format was very similar to that of Capital, in which the links were fast paced and didn't say anything that has particularly stuck in my mind as interesting. Although I did find that they had specific links dedicated to announcing tour dates and releases, indicating that the station is targetted to a certain type of listener with a particular interest in this type of music.

The music that was played, although specifically indie based, was extremely mainstream. I found that [in the daytime] they played many classics, such as; Libertines - Can't Stand Me Now and other songs that were in the charts, despite being "indie". In two (almost full) days of listening, I heard 4 Kasabian tracks, 3 tracks by the Arctic Monkeys and 3 Oasis tracks, amongst other repeated artists. This indicates to me that their daytime catalogue works on the same system as other commercial stations, A list, B list and recurrent.

I found that the format went [mainly] like this;

  1. Song
  2. Song
  3. Voice Break
  4. Song
  5. Voice Break
  6. Song
  7. Song
  8. Ad Break
  9. Voice Break
  10. Song
  11. Voice Break
  12. Song
  13. Song
  14. Song
  15. Voice Break

Yes, this varied at times, however it is definitely a station that focuses on music rather than talk. I

Smooth Radio Listening - Aaron Chawro

This week for my listening I chose to listen to Smooth Radio. I listened during the drive time show with Carlos 4pm till 6pm on a Thursday.

I felt the show itself was clearly target at an older audience between the ages of 40 and 50. This is because of the music that was featured on the show during the two hours that I listened. It featured music from the 70’s and 80’s mainly with artists such as Sting and Sister Sledge. In particular I felt that it was aimed at a female audience of this age group, due to the fact that it was mostly pop songs that were played during this period when I was listening.

A sample of what I heard was the following songs:

Yvonne Elliman – If I Can’t Have You

Pointer Sisters – Slow Hand

Lionel Richie & Shania Twain – My Endless Love

Elvis Presley – In The Ghetto

Johnny Nash – Tears On My Pillow

Elton John - Sacrifice

I personally felt that there were more adverts than music due to the frequent nature of their appearance. Adverts were aired on the show every 2 -3 songs and lasted 5 -7 minutes in advertising time. I heard adverts for clients such as Coco Pops, Leicester Race Course, Stella May Dentists, Pegasus/Medical Claims and many more. These helped to cement my theory of the target audience being middle aged women.

With presenting, I felt that the DJ was a very standardised presenter, in the sense he clearly had a radio trained voice as it was very clear and formal. He didn’t say much except advertise station competitions, say what songs had been played and occasionally inject some conversation into the show. But personally I felt he lacked personality or individuality and as a result, I failed to connect with him or take notice of anything particularly unique about him or his presenting style.

Life Of Grime

My show is called Life Of Grime, playing the best in early & new grime music, going back to touches of Garage, and through to the more grimey influenced Dubstep, Having already done a similar show for The Oasis Radio, I decided to take on the same theme, but without repeating any of the songs from my original show. I tried to avoid the obvious names such as Dizzee Rascal & Tempa T, although I have included Wiley & Skepta, they are a song from a new album, and an old little-known B-side respectively. I also tried to include some unreleased tunes i.e. Tinie Tempah, Krept & Konan etc. as well as brand new releases. Mixed in with some little known artists such as D Double E & Kozzie. Also playing some older pre-2005 grime for the older fans for a nostalgic element.
